Chaperones

The initiative tries – if necessary - to chaperone refugees’ visits to local authorities, schools, doctors or even lawyers. Usually us simply being there is regarded as major help and support. It is not easy and often scares fugitives to have to go to unfamiliar places, having to ask for directions or introducing themselves in foreign surroundings. It is a major relieve for all involved, if our chaperones help clarify what the individual needs.

In other cases it is important for the chaperones to listen carefully in order to make sure that the fugitive has understood everything that was being discussed. Very rarely can one get ahold of an interpreter.

The flood of forms, letters, applications and requests is “new” for almost all foreigners. As most of the time German is a new language for most refugees, they often become overwhelmed with all the applications and forms they will be faced with.
